Daytona Beach, Fla. (Jan. 28, 2023) - WeatherTech Racing is competing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Rolex 24 At Daytona and is currently running second in GTD Pro.
Maro Engel (Germany) had the controls of the No. 79 WeatherTech Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 with Mercedes-Benz of Billings, Montana support for the opening stint. He was able to maintain the lead after starting from pole position during his hour in the car handing the wheel over to Cooper MacNeil (Hinsdale, Ill.).
“I had a really good first stint,” Engel said. “I was able to slot into a nice rhythm after that first yellow. So far so good, the car is running well. We will get everyone in and get into our endurance rhythm and keep the car safe into tomorrow.”
MacNeil was in for a double stint.
“The WeatherTech Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 is really nice to drive,” MacNeil said. “The car is on rails. It is busy, but the driving level is very good across all five classes. The Rolex 24 is not an easy race. We’ve had good pit stops so far, aside from the wheels spinning a little when Jules got in. We will keep it safe through the night and on the lead lap and see where we are at when the sun comes up.”
Jules Gounon (France) was third in the seat and had to serve a drive through penalty for wheels spinning while on the jacks.
“The WeatherTech Racing car is running really good,” Gounon said. “So now we have 17 hours to go. We have to keep it clean. The track is messy at the moment off the line. The WeatherTech Racing/Proton team is performing well, and everything is good.
Daniel Juncadella (Spain) is behind the wheel for his first stint then the rotation will start again with Maro Engel.
