Watkins Glen, Ny., (June 25, 2023) - WeatherTech Racing finished fourth at the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen today at Watkins Glen International.
Daniel Juncadella (Spain) and Jules Gounon (France) drove a solid, fault free race to bring the No. 79 WeatherTech Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 with Mercedes-Benz of Billings, Montana support to the checker in fourth place after six-hours of racing in upstate New York.
The competitors were greeted with sunny skies and the warmest temperatures of the weekend. The Mercedes-AMG factory driving duo, together with WeatherTech Racing/Proton took the maximum Michelin Endurance Championship points with the car they had. The team was hoping for mixed conditions like they experienced throughout Friday and Saturday, but the race was dry the entire distance.
“I felt we won today,” Gounon said. “We got the maximum with the way the car is with the current rules. The WeatherTech Racing/Proton team and Dani had no mistakes. We tried crazy moves with the strategy and had good pit stops. When we were in the front we just couldn’t stay there. I am looking forward to racing at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in two weeks which will be a new track for me.”
“I am happy with the result,” Juncadella said. “It was much better than what we expected. We had zero mistakes. The team is doing great. A fourth-place finish is the best we could of hoped for today.”
The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will travel further north to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for the Chevrolet Grand Prix to run July 6-9.
