WeatherTech Racing Finishes Fifth at Road America

Elkhart Lake, Wis., (Aug. 6, 2023) - WeatherTech Racing finished fifth at the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Sportscar Weekend at Road America today.

Daniel Juncadella (Spain) had the wheel of the No. 79 WeatherTech Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 with Mercedes-Benz of Billings, Montana support for the early start to the two-hour-and-forty-minute race. The team took an aggressive fuel strategy from the drop of the green flag pitting the Spaniard just 30-minutes into the race. With the hopes of a last stint yellow for at least four laps, which is typical of a race at Road America, it just didn’t come, and Jules Gounon (France) had to pit for fuel with just 15-minutes remaining surrendering a podium finish.

“We gambled at the beginning of the race thinking we would get a yellow late in the running and it didn’t come,” Gounon said. “Typically, you get a yellow almost every 75-minutes here and the last one didn’t happen for us. We hoped to get a result for all of the WeatherTech fans here today, but we will look to VIR.”

“Disappointing result for sure after a good qualifying run,” Juncadella said. “We had to take the risk. We were not fast enough on pace with the Aston and the Corvette. We took the gamble to jump them on the first pit stop and we did and led some laps. We had to do it. It just didn’t pay off this time.”

The IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship will travel to Virginia International Raceway for another GT only race weekend, Aug. 25-27.
