WeatherTech Racing Ninth at CTMP
Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, (July 7, 2019) - WeatherTech Racing drivers Cooper MacNeil (Hinsdale, Ill.) and Toni Vilander (Kankaanpää, Finland) finished ninth in today's running of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Mobil 1 Sportscar Grand Prix presented by Acura to run at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP).
MacNeil started the race from his ninth-place qualifying position. He was able to improve to sixth at the hand off to Vilander. The Finn was running in the top five as pit stops cycled throughout the two-hour-and-forty-minute race. He navigated a late race caution and red flag during his run, but in the end took the checker in ninth.
"It was a tough day today, we struggled a little bit with the pace of our car compared to the others," MacNeil said. "I try to drive the wheels off the thing in a smooth manner and managed to be within a few tenths of the leaders, but just couldn't keep up. Toni got in and had some issues with the switches on the steering wheel, but he stuck with it and in the end we finished where we started, ninth. Not ideal, but the car is in one piece and we will work with the team to get more speed out of it for the Bull Ring that is Lime Rock in two weeks."
"When I got in the car I was having some trouble with some of the steering wheel switches," Vilander said. "Instead of pitting and trying to fix it we just kept going. The race got crazy at the end with the yellow and then the red flag with just 17-minutes to go. We were able to hold on for a top ten finish. On to Lime Rock."
The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTD and GTLM competitors will run next at the Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park, July 19-20.
